Robert F. Carley

Dr. Robert F. Carley is Associate Professor of International Studies at Texas A&M University, College Station and a cultural theorist whose work explores the relationship between race, class, and political mobilization by re-conceptualizing protest tactics as a form of cultural practice.

Dr. Carley is author and editor of six books and over a dozen peer reviewed articles and book chapters. His most recent essays are published or forthcoming in the following books: The Anthem Companion to Antonio Gramsci, The Rhetoric of Social Movements, and The Sage Handbook of Critical Pedagogy as well as the journals Contention: The Multidisciplinary Journal of Social Protest, Postmodern Culture, Theory in Action, and Sociological Focus.

Dr. Carley is past recipient of the North Central Sociological Association’s Scholarly Achievement Award, given to research that demonstrates an overall contribution to and impact on the discipline of sociology. He is currently a governing board member of the Cultural Studies Association and co-editor of its journal, Lateral. Dr. Carley has served two terms on the Steering Committee for the Union of Democratic Communications (UDC) and was co-chair and co-coordinator of the UDC from 2018-2021. He serves on the editorial boards of Sociological Focus: Journal of the North Central Sociological Association (2017-2021), The Howard Journal of Communication, and the Cultural Studies Association Awards Review Board.
