Bill was born in Gibbon, Nebraska in 1941 and relocated to Oregon in 1949. After graduating from school in the tiny timber town of Powers, he moved to Port Orford. In 1961, he enlisted in the USAF and served in Texas, Ohio, Michigan and Vietnam. Taking advantage of his GI Bill benefits, and flexible scheduling by his mill employers, he finished his Bachelor of Arts program at Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Oregon in 1969.
Bill spent many of his working years in plywood mills, logging camps, and on commercial fishing vessels. For 15 years, he enjoyed operating small salmon trollers in California, various Oregon spots, and Port Orford, his home port. He loved spending his summers in picturesque port towns, being independent, and living his version of the fisherman lifestyle. When his fishing days were done, he became an elementary school teacher.
Bill retired in 2002, lives with his wife in Lebanon, Oregon and enjoys travel, hiking, fly fishing, golfing, photography, “tinkering with words,” and sharing his experiences and photographs.
