Loong went to Canada to further his studies. A graduate at the University of Toronto and Carleton University in Ottawa, he settled in Canada but visited his birthplace regularly.

The articles he published during his career covered a wide variety of topics and appeared in the news media in Asia, Europe and North America.

He retired from journalism in 2012 and began teaching media literacy at Canadian colleges a few years later. He found time between semesters to collect his thoughts and write this book, Tea Before the Rain.
