Richard Riddell

Richard Riddell is an educationalist and academic who has worked for over forty years in and for state-provided schooling in England. He has been a teacher in schools and a university, a senior official in four Councils, including the City of Bristol where he was Director of Education for seven years, a senior education consultant and head of education for Amnesty International UK.

His writing and research into schools and schooling began with the dilemmas faced by educators and teachers in urban areas in trying to provide good experiences and outcomes for all their students. His PhD was also on this. The prime focus of his work - his research, writing and teaching - has always been on how schools can help achieve equity more effectively and how this is enabled or frustrated by effective governance in a professed democratic society.

He has written four books to date. The latest, Schooling in a Democracy, was published in 2023.
