Ysabelle Taylor

Ysabelle Taylor was born in 1958 and has been a dance professional her entire life. She trained at the Royal Ballet School in London and danced with well known European ballet companies including the Royal Swedish Ballet. When she retired from full time performing she continued to choreograph and perform in independent productions. She qualified as a ballet teacher with the Royal Academy of Dance in 1987 and worked for the RAD as a freelance tutor for 20 years. In addition to teaching and choreographing worldwide, she ran her own ballet school in South London for 30 years. Ysabelle has always written, mostly diaries, letters and sometimes poems. Her article “Behind the Scenes: Dancers and Pregnancy” was published in the Dancing Times in July 2010. Her book publications, also on kindle, are: Reflections - A Collection of Poems (2019); Europe On My Toes - A Ballet Dancer’s Diary (2019) She also edited her grandmother's war memoir: Living in Java under Japanese Occupation during World War Two.

As a child I'd devour books about ballet like a box of chocolates! Well, I recently found my appetite again when I read Ysabelle Taylor's compelling book - a fascinating, honest, behind-the-scenes look at the world of professional ballet. Hard to put down! The strength, hard work and determination it takes to succeed in an exceptionally gruelling and competitive career is amazing. And that's not to mention talent! Once started you'll want to follow every pas de deux, adagio, arabasque, fouetté...of the author's journey, the highs and lows, and the ultimate thrill of performing solo to a packed theatre. At the end I found myself shouting bravo! Europe on My Toes will also serve as an inspiration for non-dancers as it teaches perseverence, ignoring the naysayers in favour the inner voice and never, ever giving up.
