Pete Hammert

Bernhard William "Little Pete" Hammert has been an Oklahoma farmer and rancher all his life. Semi-retired, he still likes to dabble in the cattle business and grow wheat in Caddo County. His relatives and friends know him for his story-telling talents about his family and the life experiences that shaped him. His recently-released book and e-book on Amazon is "Secondhand Cowboys, a Slice of Life in Early Day Anadarko, Oklahoma." In it, he retells homespun stories told him by the "old folks," his grandfather, father and uncle, as they lived life in that amazing frontier town that sprouted up seemingly overnight from the prairie of Indian Territory. Retired journalist Pat Hammert, widow of Pete's younger brother, adds a historical perspective to the book of how that unique event actually happened at the turn of the 20th century.

Pete graduated Oklahoma A&M College, Stillwater, (now Oklahoma State University) with an animal science degree. Working in farm production credit, he also farmed and ran cattle in partnership with his father, later branching out to raise stocker and feeder cattle in Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas. He and his late wife, Lois, reared three daughters, DeLois, Janice and Rhonda. He is grandpa to Matt, Ty, Evan and Carly, and great-grandpa to Emma, Hannah, Aiden, Easton and Ethan. He was again widowed recently, having lost his wife Rosezellen "Rosie." Dealing with grief and unable to sleep, many of the stories in his book came to life on a yellow legal pad in the middle of the night.
