Bob Gates

Bob Gates is a teacher, scholar, photographer, writer, and student of Buddhism. He grew up in New Jersey and now lives in Central New York.

Bob received his PhD from the University of Iowa and published his first book, a critical edition of a Middle English poem. He taught English at Syracuse University for many years and was chair of the department. He taught courses in writing, medieval literature, post-colonial literature, and psychology and literary texts.

His fiction and poetry have been published in many literary magazines, including “The Fiction Review,” “Santa Clara Review,” “Orange Coast Review,” “Verve,” “Pinchpenny,” “Green's Magazine,” “the new renaissance,” “Black Bear Review,” “Slipstream,” and “Wind.”

He is also an award-winning photographer, and his photographs have been widely exhibited and published in national magazines such as “PhotoLife,” “The Photo Review,” “Photographers Forum,” “Martha’s Vineyard Magazine,” and “Finger Lakes Magazine.” He has won numerous awards for his photography, including second place in the “National Geographic Traveler Magazine” World in Focus contest and best drone photo of 2016 by “Time Magazine.” His photographs can be viewed at www.bobgatesphoto.com.

He has been a practitioner of insight meditation for over thirty-five years, and the book “Extreme Measures: the Sayings of Trebor Setag” arises from that experience and from a course he taught for many years called “Signifying Nothing.”
