Joyce Nunn Shumate

Joyce Nunn Shumate is a freelance writer and poet. Over the years, she has written many historical articles for the Southern Historical News in Hiram, Georgia. These articles pertain to Confederate people and places in the South. She has spoken to local schools during Confederate History Month and has held several offices in the United Daughters of the Confederacy, both in her chapter and in the Alabama Division.

She was born May 5, 1944 in Atlanta, Texas and raised in Channelview, Texas. She is the daughter of Thomas Lee Nunn and Lena Belle Cothren Nunn. She graduated from Channelview High School in 1962 and worked briefly before marrying, Herbert Douglas Shumate in 1964. They moved to his home state of Alabama in 1965 and live on a 100-acre farm near Carbon Hill. They have two sons, both married to good Christian women and they have five grandchildren. She is a devoted genealogist and joined the United Daughters of the Confederacy in 1994 and the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1995. She credits her Confederate ancestry for opening the avenue of inspiration for the poems in her book “Whispers From The Past” and her love of history for the inspiration of her other books.

She has written and published seven books, all available on Amazon, and is currently writing three others that will be out soon. These are “The Hand That Rocked The Cradle”, about the mothers of some of the famous people of the Confederacy; “The Confederate Medal of Honor Recipients,” men who received the Confederate Medal of Honor and “The Recipients of the Davis Guard’s Medal, “ the men who fought in the Battle of Sabine Pass.
