Lewis Brown
Dr. Steve L. Brown, Professor and Assistant Dean Emeritus at the University of Georgia, is currently the Executive Director of The Peanut Foundation.
He has degrees in botany and plant pathology from Auburn University and a Ph.D. in Entomology from Clemson University. He served as a faculty member at Auburn University and at UGA where he attained the rank of Professor. At UGA, Dr. Brown was the Extension Entomologist for peanuts and stored agricultural products. He spent much of his time during the 1990’s working on solutions to tomato spotted wilt that threatened the industry at that time.
He worked closely with the American Peanut Shellers Association to provide training on the management of pests of farmer’s stock peanuts. He served on a national task force that advised EPA on the reregistration of aluminum phosphide fumigants. Dr. Brown’s administrative experience includes two years as the Interim Assistant Dean for the UGA Tifton Campus, one year as Interim Director of the Peanut and Mycotoxin Innovation Lab at UGA, and six years as Assistant Dean for Extension where he coordinated all agricultural and natural resources programming in UGA Cooperative Extension.
Dr. Brown retired with 33 years of experience in Cooperative Extension. Among his awards are the D.W. Brooks Award for Excellence in Extension, the Walter B. Hill Award for Public Service and Outreach, the Peanut Research and Education Award from the American Peanut Council. He is a Fellow of the American Peanut Research and Education Society and has received the DowAgroSciences Award for Excellence in Education from the same Society.
Steve Brown was born in Chattanooga, TN but his family moved to Huntsville, AL when he was only three years old. He has also lived in Auburn, AL; Fayetteville, AR; Clemson, SC and Tifton, GA. Despite his clearly southern heritage, his career allowed him to travel extensively, giving him a different perspective of his world. Those different perspectives caused conflicts in the value system he learned as a child. These conflicts were the impetus for the writing of Brown’s first novel, In His Own Image.
