Peter Suchmann

After graduating from Queens College with a degree in Education, my teaching career started in Great Neck, N.Y., first subbing and then teaching my own classes. I taught K-8 science for 7 years before landing a tenure track teaching position as an Earth Science teacher in the Great Neck Public Schools. After a few years, I applied for the position of Science Department Head and was given that opportunity to lead a great group of science teachers. I ran the “Rebels with a Cause” Environmental Club, taught Regents Earth Science and devoted many extra hours as the Dept. Head. After I retired in 2010, I soon found myself back in the classroom, this time at a parochial high school in Great Neck, where I set up an endowed classroom as a Makerspace. With the onset of Covid in 2020, I retired again for the last time. Since retiring I have been busy writing a book series as a guide to environmental activism for students and teachers. My hope is that my book series will facilitate the development of effective and enjoyable Earth Action Clubs, as well as many interdisciplinary lessons dealing with climate anxiety and other related issues. I am very proud to have my book series endorsed by Bill McKibben.
