I'm Regina Yuill, the genealogy enthusiast in my family and author of Preparing
to Write and Publish Your Book: Tips and Tricks for the Writer. My concept
for a family history book began many years ago after several genealogy
adventures with my mother. After adding more genealogy records to my
mother's genealogy collection (which she had started in 1948), I began to wonder
how we were going to preserve all the genealogy records and family knowledge
we had gathered.
Little did I realize the daunting project I was about to begin. I had limited
experience with preparing indexes, table of contents, footnotes, endnotes,
photographs and plain old writing techniques. So I decided to attend genealogy
society meetings and national genealogy conferences to learn more about the
writing and publishing process. However, as I soon discovered, there was a lack
of writing and publishing guidebooks geared towards genealogists and family
historians. Despite this, I decided to jump in with both feet forward and published
my first family history book in 2005.
And as any proud author would do, I'm always happy to show my book to fellow
genealogists in the hopes that I can encourage them to preserve their own family
history by also writing a book. I'm a firm believer in the preservation of history
and have given lectures explaining tips and tricks on writing and publishing a
book.
Even with these lectures, I realized that many genealogists were still struggling
with their writing and publishing projects. So, I decided to write Preparing to
Write and Publish Your Book: Tips and Tricks for the Writer, which explains
the tips and tricks I used in preparing my own book. I hope my book will make
the writing and publishing process easier as you prepare your own family history
book.
Good luck, have fun and I hope you succeed in publishing a family history book
for others to enjoy
