Roger Tsai-Chung Lin

My Chinese name is Tsai-Chung Lin. I moved to Canada from Taiwan in November 2002. I am currently working as a civil engineer in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I love to be a civil engineer. I came from the south part of Taiwan, from a small village called Datie. I got a Master’s Degree in Forestry from National Taiwan University in 1996 and went to the ROC army as a second lieutenant army officer stationed in Matsu – a small island near China mainland, for 2 years. I became a math teacher afterwards, until I met my wife, Patricia, who is from Canada. She came to Taiwan on a secret mission from God, to rescue me from my dead-end life (in reality, she came to teach English). God thought my life would be better if I went a different route. At least, that’s how I see it! Patricia changed my fate.

We came to Calgary together and I got another Master’s Degree, this time in civil engineering, from the University of Calgary, in 2004. I worked for a land surveyor company as a field rodman and indoor drafting person in 2005. At that time, the software I used was Land Desktop (LDD). In 2007, I went to MMM group as a CADD designer to do municipal and land development work and started using Civil 3D.

My area in civil engineering is stormwater drainage, grading design and road design. My working experience let me do Civil engineering design, 3D modeling using Civil 3D and 2D drafting using AutoCAD. I like to do highway drainage design, land development and our special Alberta oil sands development.

I always like to help new professional civil engineering people and my colleagues with anything I know, or if I know where to find help, because many people helped me along the way all the time. Some of them helped me with Civil 3D, some helped with Storm water drainage design and the software operations, and some for roads, crossings, and pad design. I need to thank you all for your help.
