BIO: RICHARD L. SAUNDERS
I’m a professor emeritus at Dartmouth Medical School in Hanover, NH. I was the chairman of neurosurgery at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center for nearly 20 years. As an academic, I had a tolerable scientific resume, however, SPACE MOUSE is my first effort at children's fiction. Upon retirement I took up stone-carving, working in marble, alabaster and limestone. Whereas former physicians often find giving up their identity as physicians difficult, stone carving has become who I am. Animals, like Bert M. Whisperfoot, the little mouse of our story, are a frequent subject. I would like to believe I’m a better artist than I was surgeon, but then, who knows. My parents were free-spirited artsy writers which I suspect genetically preordained that I’d someday carve and write about a little mouse with big ears nicknamed BMW.
