Phil Mansell originally trained at the London Film School where he specialised in script-writing, directing and animation, and had three films screened at the National Film Theatre. After teaching film-making, photography and art, he moved into the world of advertising and PR and was a professional writer until he took early retirement from his job as Press and Communications Officer at the University of Wales, Newport where he gained an MA in Multimedia and Information Design.
Phil has had more than a dozen plays published by Stage Scripts. His full length play, 'According to Claudia' was selected by Newport Playgoers Society to launch their 92nd season. Previously his one act play 'Poor Yorick' was a winning entry in a competition run as part of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Open Stages project and has been performed by several theatre groups (Phil directed a revised version of his play in Javea, Spain in the summer of 2018). Another of Phil’s plays, 'Bunkered', was one of the winning entries in a competition judged by Welsh playwright Frank Vickery. He also won the drama section of the annual writing competition organised by the University of Wales, Newport and judged by Wales’s national poet, Gillian Clarke, who wrote of Phil’s work: “The dialogue is completely convincing, funny and touching”.
Phil has published ten illustrated children’s book 'Uncle Mungo and the Great Wallaby Painting Contest', 'Arabella Saturday and the Circus Next Door', and 'What Do Pirates Have For Breakfast? Two of his books are also available in Spanish. He has several other books and plays in the pipeline.
