Chadwick Dearing (Chad) Oliver’s father was a practicing forester and Chad used to follow him in the woods. His father would tell Chad what they wished they knew about forests, but didn’t. Chad went to college (University of the South), graduate school (Yale University, School of Forestry and Environmental Studies), post-graduate studies (The Harvard Forest, Harvard University) and spent the next 45 years as a Professor—first at the University of Washington (Seattle) and then at Yale University. He first studied forests and then other resources as well.
During his career, he worked with forests and other resources in many countries, with governments and businesses in the United States and elsewhere, and testified in hearings, and convened national and international expert meetings. He is the recipient of the International Union of Forest Research Organization Host Country Scientific Achievement Award (given by the United States only once to three people) and two honorary Doctorate degrees from universities, is a Fellow in the Society of American Foresters, has been a Fulbright Senior Fellow to Turkey, and is author of over 150 scientific and technical papers. He has testified in U.S. Congressional and Executive hearings and has advised other governments, private businesses, and ENGO’s.
Chad likes to concentrate on applied research—Pasteur’s quadrant (1), where one begins with an applied problem and, as necessary, develops or revises the theoretical underpinnings. His writing style is to include succinct, clear, readable information; cite many references; and include many figures, charts, and photographs. His interests have evolved from forestry to all resources and the environment at a global scale.
