Phil Kershner

Phil Kershner is a United Church of Christ pastor in Marine, Illinois. Prior to going into pastoral ministry he was a high school math and history teacher for 17 years. He has a master's degree in history from Loyola University in Chicago and a master's degree in divinity from Eden Theological Seminary in St. Louis. He has a layman's interest in philosophy, psychology and neuroscience. He has been especially influenced in those three areas by David Hume and Simon Blackburn, Jonathan Haidt and Steven Pinker. His goal in life is to find a scholar Pinker hasn't read.

He is married to Sandee Kershner and they have two daughters, Ashlyn and Lauren. Their influence would require more room than is allowed here.

He has previously published three articles in CrossCurrents, "The Heart of the Matter," "He Loves Me... He loves me Not... The most Overrated Chapter in the Bible," and "The Lost Boys Revisited." He has also published "Madness and Making Sense" in the journal, Sofia, and one poem in the Jewish Literary Journal. Why The United States is A Morally Good Nation: A View From the Center is his first book. Time will tell if he will keep his promise to Sandee that it will be his last book.
