Gabriel Stein

I am a Swedish economist, but have lived in London since 1990. Although I worked as a macroeconomics forecaster my hobby has always been history. My favourite is the history of the East Roman or 'Byzantine' Empire, but, in fact, I think all countries have an interesting history.

I have written a trilogy about an Englishman who leaves his country after the Norman Conquest and joins the Varangian Guard in Constantinople. The three books – 'An English Revenge'; 'An English King'; and 'An English Succession' – can also be bought in an omnibus ebook version, 'An English Varangian'.

Together with John Nugée, I have written 'Sailing Free – the saga of Kári the Icelander', a novel that take s place in Iceland in the 1050s and 1060s. This is very much a book with a libertarian theme running through it.

I have an MA in Military History. My thesis was called 'Attacking the giant's jugular instead of his toe –Anglo-Swedish negotiations in the Crimean War', but in the published book version it is called 'King Oscar's Gamble – Sweden's Secret Plan to Attack Russia in 1856'.

There will be more books coming, both fiction and non-fiction. In the meantime, I bicycle a lot.
