Brynn Wein Shiovitz

Brynn W. Shiovitz, PhD is an educational consultant, developmental editor, and independent researcher based in Los Angeles, California. Her latest book, Behind the Screen: Tap Dance, Race, and Invisibility During Hollywood's Golden Age (Oxford, 2023) looks at why and how outdated racial content not only slipped passed motion picture censors, but in fact thrived during the 1930s and 1940s. Her award winning writing has been published in the Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles Review of Books, LA Dance Chronicle, Zocalo Public Square, Newsweek, Dance Chronicle, Dance Research Journal, Theatre Survey, Theatre Journal, Women and Performance, Jazz Perspectives, as well as Dance, Dance Teacher, and Dance Spirit Magazines. She holds an MA in Performance Studies from New York University and a PhD in Culture and Performance from the University of California, Los Angeles.
