Samantha Pious is a translator, poet, editor, and medievalist. Her translations of Judith Teixeira, Cactus Flowers (Headmistress Press, 2025), have been shortlisted for a Lambda Literary Award and a Golden Crown Literary Award. Her translations of Natalie Clifford Barney, Selected Poems (2025), are the first book of Barney's verse to appear in English. She has also translated Renée Vivien in A Crown of Violets (2015, revised 2017), which was named by Meg Day as a finalist for the Charlotte Mew Prize. Her translation of Christine de Pizan's One Hundred Ballades of a Lover and His Lady is forthcoming. A volume of her original poems, Sappho Is Dead, appeared in 2024. She holds a PhD in comparative literature from the University of Pennsylvania. By translating women poets of the past, she hopes to contribute to a canon—or canons—of our own.
