Michele L. Owens, Ph.D. was born in Brooklyn, New York where she lived with her parents three siblings, and an assortment of dogs, cats and stray visiting birds. After graduating from high school, she attended Case Western Reserve University in Ohio, where she was active in the student movement for more diversity and inclusion. A five year stint at teaching elementary school revived her interest in psychology, and she went on to her pursue her Ph.D. in clinical psychology soon after.
Over the years, she has had a variety of experiences in her field, many of which have involved working with adolescents in various settings. She finds this age group "exciting" to work with and continues to do so today. Dr. Owens has had a private practice for many years as well and has treated individuals and couples from varied backgrounds. Her perspective on how culture can impact mental health and wellness has been a core that underlies how she approaches her profession. She has written chapters for two books with this bent, Psychotherapy with African American Women, and The Psychology of Black Boys and Adolescents.
She is a founding partner in Sessions Innovations In Psychology, LLC., where she works with two other female psychologists. Through consultation, coaching and workshops they provide clients with a fresh perspective on creating healthier relationships at home, work and play. Towards that end, their new book, "How to Free Your Relationships of Unspoken Expectations," discusses the impact of silent agreements with partners, family members, colleagues and friends, and gives guidance on how to address them for maximum growth and happiness.
