Frank Kaput is a fictional teacher of Greek literature. He received his fictional Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, and served as a fictional assistant professor of Classics at Yale for seven years. His years at Yale were unhappy ones: His young son Michael drowned; his wife Sandy divorced him; and he failed to win tenure.
Mr. Kaput returned to his hometown of Gradgrind, Ohio, to settle some necessary affairs after his father's death and accepted a position at Dry Springs High School, a job he unexpectedly came to love. During his first year at Dry Springs High, he wrote what is now titled Refining Golden, a translation of Plato's Alcibiades I.
Frank Kaput is a pseudonym for Steve Hays, who includes Mr. Kaput's story in The Falconer's Call.
In The Falconer's Call Plato's rigorous and persistent insistence on intellectual integrity and moral responsibility shakes up his students' lives, their school, and their town.
