Illustrator Marla Goodman grew up in Cottonwood Canyon, a rural community near Bozeman, Montana. She attended a two-room school and rode horses a lot. In the 1970's, trips to town often involved a visit to the Carnegie Library, a matinee at the Ellen Theater, or a lemon coke at the soda fountain at the back of Buttrey's grocery. Back then, big events in town were the Gallatin County Winter fair and the MSU Spring Rodeo.
Receiving a degree in painting from Montana State University, Marla spent her next several years supporting herself as a graphic designer and raising her daughter, Wren. She currently lives with her spouse, David in a rambling 1930's house on the south side of Bozeman. In her studio, an old kitchen, paints and drawing supplies pack the cupboards and printmaking tools can be found in the oven of an old gas stove. Active in all manner of community arts and music events, Goodman founded the Bozeman Ukulele Cabaret, teaches art workshops for senior citizens and appears sporadically as the performing personality, Polly Vinyl, Art Thereminist.
