Diego Ivan Duran-Medina

Diego Iván Durán-Medina is a lifelong educator interested in thinking about new ways of developing citizens of all ages, with a special focus on young people. He writes on history, civics, civic engagement, service-learning and the intersection of activism, art, and social change.

He has published his first book called Uncommon Civics: The Teaching Handbook for Activating Citizenship.

Diego Iván Durán-Medina was born in Caracas, Venezuela. He graduated from Colgate University, New York University and Columbia University- Teachers College. He has worked as a teacher, administrator and consultant in Washington, D.C., New York City, Hawaii, Colorado and Florida.

He is the author of multiple articles on service-learning and civic engagement. He founded LeadServe Consulting in 2013 to help schools become better at developing both scholars and citizens.

Since 2015, he has served as Director of Service-Learning at Shorecrest Preparatory School in St. Petersburg, Florida. In 2017, he co-founded the Center for Service Learning Leadership (CSLL) dedicated to helping independent school educators create and improve service projects tied to classroom learning.
