Sarah Jane Conaway

Sarah Jane WAS a lousy reader in her early life to young adulthood. She found it hard to read most anything. Why? She was taught sight reading rather than phonics. She has memories of her sister getting into trouble for reading instead of getting her chores done. Years later, Sarah Jane and her husband, Ron, were counseled by a Christian Psychologist, a requirement by the mission board, before going to the mission field. It was at that time she was told that she related reading with getting into trouble since she had been praised for getting her chores done.

However, she always enjoyed studying. She felt good learning. She had not realized why she could not read well. In spite of all of this she studied hard and with the blessing of the Lord she became a registered nurse in 1973. She continued her studies and received a Bachelor of Arts in Christian Education in 1979.

Following God’s call on her life to be a missionary made it necessary for her to teach her own children. She accepted this challenge. At age 30 she began studying phonics and then taught her oldest son. At the end of the phonics course she realized that she could read so much better. Reading became a PLEASURE instead of a difficult CHORE.

Sarah Jane has been a Christian for over 59 years. In that time she has taught

• Sunday School,

• ladies classes,

• classes on how to teach Sunday School

She has counseled ladies.

She has also spoken to:

• ladies groups and

• churches about her ministry.

She, Ron, and their three sons were missionaries to Papua New Guinea in the South Pacific from 1978 till 1994. Their ministry moved to Mexico in 1995 where they are currently ministering. Ron graduated to Heaven in January 2005. She and her oldest son, Eric, have continued with the ministry. Timothy, her youngest son, rejoined them in 2008. Now he took his brother, Eric's, place in April of 2022 since Eric had graduated to Heaven as a result of kidney disease.

In 2015 she was seeking the Lord’s will about her life as a widow of just over ten years. She had accomplished the goals of her youth – to be a nurse and a missionary. Times had changed and she had to fill in the space vacated by Ron’s graduation to Heaven. She was asking the Lord, “What can I do to serve You in my senior years?”

The Lord answered that prayer. While she was preparing a lesson for her Mexican ladies’ class just as clear as a bell the Lord said, “Put these in a book.” This was the beginning of her current edition of "Joseph and Jonah: A Faithful Servant and a Runaway Preacher." The first edition was full of mistakes and after learning more through Self Publishing School and much prayer this book came into existence. Now she has published a total of eight books and more are coming. Praise the Lord!
