Rock’s first Air Force assignment was analyzing highly classified technical intelligence, and the second was tracking a new generation of Soviet ICBMs.

His fiction is drawn from those long nights on watch, and the many sci-fi classics he read during off-hours and sometimes on long dark nights waiting for something, um, interesting, to pop over the horizon. He read Heinlein, Pournelle, Niven, Herbert, Pohl and many other authors writing about space travel, aliens, and distant planets.
