Robert Eugene Johnson

ROBERT EUGENE JOHNSON has explored numerous life-paths. Early in his life he was a Jesuit seminarian. Since then he has worked as a worker on a gold dredge; a pulper in a paper mill; a high-school teacher of Alaska native children; a real estate broker; the commander of a USAF Titan II missile combat crew; a civilian advisor in missilery for the Department of Defense; the office manager for a marine aquaculture company; and the one he deems most fulfilling, the senior editor at two scientific publishing companies. He attended Wichita State University and Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA and Florence, Italy. He holds degrees in French and biology and has a certificate in technical writing.

He is a member of the Board of Editors in the Life Sciences (BELS). He authored sections of two major style manuals (Scientific Style and Format, 7th Edition, and the AMA Manual of Style, 10th Edition). For five years, he wrote a monthly column --"The Word Hawk"-- for the Council of Science Editors. In 2000 he was selected as one of two Language Arts editors for the groundbreaking California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE).

His avocations include photography, climbing, fishing, genealogy, tai chi, hand-drumming, and singing (he appeared in the chorus of 12 opera productions). He has been a runner half his life. He was a contestant on Jeopardy! and Team Captain of Gonzaga University's G.E. College Bowl team-- "hard on the nerves, because it was broadcast live throughout the country."

He is married and lives in Palo Alto, CA.
