Avinash Kumar

Avinash Kumar grew up in the rusty, river-threaded landscape of Bihar, where he learned to sketch before he learned to write — a detail that has never quite left his work. Stories, for him, have always been visual things first: felt before they are spoken, drawn before they are typed.

A Biotechnology graduate from ICFAI University, he has built a career in technology, working with IBM, Tech Mahindra, and currently Schneider Electric. But his creative life has run on a parallel track for as long as he can remember. He is perhaps best known in theatre circles for Platform No. 3, a play he wrote, directed, and performed — a work that reflects his instinct to collapse the distance between author, maker, and character. He has extended this restlessness into animation and short filmmaking, both of which have earned critical notice.

In 2018 he published Twelve Stolen Stories, his debut short fiction collection, and he also writes poetry. His current project is a memoir drawing on the world he grew up in — a Bihar childhood that, as readers of his fiction will recognise, has always been his most inexhaustible source.
