As a literary character, Hugh Turley has wandered into the wrong genre. His background as portrait artist, truck-loader, barge-cleaner, freighter shipping-clerk, sculptor, teacher, commercial artist, and writer of articles for art-historical journals might make him more suitable for other genres, but it turns out he’s stuck. That’s because his initials form a picture of a suspicious-looking man with a jutting chin and a cigarette clenched between his teeth. What else do you do when you want to write fiction and that happens?
