Harry B Dodge III

A native of upstate New York, I have lived in Alaska since 1974. I graduated from Indiana U. with a biology degree and worked seasonally for the Alaska Fish & Game Dept. for several years. I got into guiding in 1975, and that has been a seasonal occupation ever since. My wife and I own Kodiak Treks, a hiking/wildlife viewing business on Kodiak Island. During my years in Alaska, I also commercially fished (halibut, crab and salmon) and wrote for the Kodiak Daily Mirror.

I enrolled in Goddard College's low-residency mfa program and earned a degree in creative writing in 2000. I had never been a big reader in my early years, but a stint in the Army and a year in Vietnam awakened a love of literature. I began writing at that time, but many years passed before my first book was published (Kodiak Island and its Bears, 2004). Writing has become my winter occupation. I also enjoy traveling to far-flung parts of the world.
