Jean-Pierre Van Noppen

Jean-Pierre van Noppen (1946-) read Germanic languages at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and graduated from the Université Libre de Bruxelles with a doctoral dissertation on communication problems in popular theology ("Spatial Thography"). He subsequently held a senior professorship in English linguistics at the same university, where he has been active as a grammarian, lexicographer, bibliographer and journal editor. Besides English language and linguistics, his teaching interests were in non-literary (pragma-)stylistics and critical discourse analysis. His publications include "Theolinguistics", "Metaphor and Religion", two bibliographies on Metaphor, "Transforming Words" (in English and French), several collective volumes, and a hundred or so articles in journals and collective volumes. Retired in 2012, he still collaborates on a multilingual, communicative online grammar, which received the Socrates Prize for pedagogical innovation in 2018.
