I’m usually holding a microphone and standing in front of a TV news camera when I say that…

Sometimes during a blizzard, or from a crime scene, or from city hall, or while interviewing a famous person…

In fact, I’ve spent 50 years reporting stories about everything you can imagine… happening in the hard news town of the Motor City.

Now, instead of reporting news with a microphone and a TV camera, I’m telling my own story on the pages of this book. It’s about my life, my career, my family, my values, and my thoughts on the world.

I wrote We’re Standing By with the same broadcast news style that helped me keep my job for so long. It’s how I tell stories.

I hope my story makes you laugh, learn something, get some insights, and think hard about how far we’ve come… and how far we still need to go.
