Mervyn Pryer

Born in 1919 in Armidale, Mervyn Pryer grew up in Binnaway. He went to Binnaway Primary and Dubbo High. Dux in the trial Leaving Certificate, Mervyn went to Armidale Teachers' College in 1937-38. He had a bad stutter as a result of being bullied and taught himself to overcome it. He began a 41 year career teaching in NSW small schools.

He was smitten from the moment he saw the willowy blond he was to marry. Mervyn took Betty to the bush, literally. To Terry Hie Hie 30 miles from Moree. They had two children.

Mervyn believed in a good joke, always with a ready supply to share. His memory was to be envied. He firmly believed he could improve upon many inventions and felt it necessary to attach notes of instructions to objects around the home, much to his family's amusement.

He retired with Betty to Grafton in 1980 and began his memoirs, grew roses and coached Mathematics. After Betty died he, he learned to cook wonderful baked dinners and cared for his four white cats. He died in 2014.
