As a journalist with newspapers, magazines and books, I have focused generally on the culture and creative self-reliance of rural America. I have worked mostly in the far reaches of western Massachusetts and North Carolina. For 24 years, I was editor of the monthly Carolina Country magazine. Over the years, I have published three books as a writer and eight as an editor. Try “Wave On,” a novel.
My wife, Susan Haynes Cates, and I lived in Chapel Hill and Roanoke Island, North Carolina, for 32 years. We now live in Fearrington, North Carolina. Here I have the time and inclination to hole up and write what moves me and rises in my imagination.
