Maclean Mbepula

Maclean Mbepula is a Malawian author, entrepreneur, poet, creative, artist and standup comedian based in Lilongwe, Malawi whose eccentric personality births forth work that is often witty, playful, humorous, fresh and quirky.

Her first public performance was when she was about 13 years old and has to date since performed in in theaters, various schools, universities, shows, on top of soap boxes, at churches and various events. Some of the events she has had the honour of performing at are: Creative Menace’s inaugural Melanonia show (2018), Girl’s Empowerment Network’s – Activism through Sights & Sounds (2018), the Human Rights Day event hosted by Malawi Human Rights Commission (2014), graced by the President of Malawi, Women of Distinction – 2012- graced by the First Lady, City of Stars 2013, DiverCity I, DiverCity II, DiverCity III, and at least on two festivals of Tumaini Festival held at Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Dowa, Malawi.

Her standup comedy engagements include: "Riaad Moosa's Malawi comedy tour", opening with Simmi Areff , by Qoncept Creative (2019), Anne Kansiime's first Malawi show by Qoncept Creative (2014) and engagements by organizations such as the Reserve Bank of Malawi as their headlining act (2014) and open mics. She has sufficient comedy material to perform for up to 30 minute slots. Though she has her very own unique, often theatrical style, her comedy influences include Sinbad the comedian, Trevor Noah, Dave Chappelle.

To date, she has performed for audiences as small as two people to over 2000 people strong, always with a sense of excitement, eagerness and professionalism.

Apart from performing, she has also provided artistic guidance as one of the judges on the panel of the World Bank’s 2015 Art Competition and that of one of three judges in the first Bible Society TV Talent Competition – Bible Youth Buzz. She is also a member of the Living Room Poetry Club which meets every Wednesday from 7pm at the Living Room Café in Lilongwe. Her audiences have been an eclectic bunch from all across the board. She says she is still exploring the power of spoken word poetry and she would like you to join her in her journey by experiencing what she has discovered so far. Though a passionate tech-entrepreneur, she is in love with the arts and has (since 2017/2018) taken up painting as an additional stream for creative expression.

As of 2019, she has published 3 books: 2 are poetry collections ("Beady Eyed & Mystified" and "FlatLine... Beep" and one is an entrepreneurship book. These are available on Amazon in both kindle and paperback.
