Kathleen Pitney Box grew up listening to family stories about pioneers and Native Americans. Traveling by wagon trains and stagecoach, relatives on both sides of her family settled in the Oregon Territory. Still living in the Pacific Northwest, she enjoys the beauty of the lands her ancestors discovered. While enjoying a career as an Elementary teacher, she delighted in teaching the history of Oregon Trail to fourth graders for 15 years in Vancouver, Washington. She developed a mock wagon train experience for her students in 1992 that still happens annually. Being semi-retired has allowed Kathy to spend more time at their family built log cabin. Located in the Columbia River Gorge, where the first settlers floated by raft, she and her husband, Marq, their three adult children, and grandchildren all enjoy white-water rafting and hiking in the many of the same areas described in her great, great grandfather Bushnell’s story.
