Why does so much voice instruction not make sense, and what can we do about it? This question has been a primary theme of my blog, vocalability.com, since 2009. I'm a voice teacher with studios in Potomac, Maryland and New York City. I've been working with singers for 37 years.
I make bridges between the theoretical and the practical parts of singers' training. Over the years, I have discovered many biases, entrenched camps, and editorial liberties in both old and new media and schools. I have studied singing treatises of the 18th and 19th centuries, the so-called "Bel Canto Era", in their original languages to learn firsthand what they really said (and didn’t say). I have clocked myriad hours listening to singers, both recorded and live, finding clues about what has changed and what is constant in the world of singing.
My first book, Sane Singing: A Guide to Vocal Progress, was published in 2018.
I have interests in a lot of areas of music, and future publications could go in several possible directions. We'll see!
