I've been writing fantasy and science fiction books for two decades helped by an assortment of rescued cats and dogs that think I'm weird but they love me anyway. Anthro, Humanities and science degrees plus continuing research provide cultural and scientific backgrounds to my tales. Imagination adds the stories of conflict, loyalty, duty, and several dollops of love interspersed with bloody battles. I've been asked if my characters are based on people I know. No, no definitely not in the fantasy books. Humans are generally much nicer. My fantasy cultures are not human and can never be for they are entirely made up with traits and abilities far different from any homo variety, erectus through sapiens. My latest series, The Mars Colony, features humans and begins with THE OLD WOMANS TALE. The sequel, JEZERO WINDS deals with rogue AI's and mysterious deaths on Mars.
