Mechel, mother to 8 and wife to one, decided that farm life would be better for their three youngest sons. So, the family moved to a small farm in Northwest Arkansas where she learned that: even a young steer can do damage a large human (her) if he runs over you, very large pigs can escape their pen and when they do its a frightening thing if they start chasing you, dogs can lick a lamb to death, goats are stinky and roosters fight when there are more than one in the flock but if you take them away from the ladies, they’re sweet as can be. One slightly battered and bruised hobby farmer decided she needed to do something less dangerous. Raising cut flowers as a business opened up a whole new world. Suddenly all of the things she enjoyed most: floriculture, botany, business, meeting people and teaching came together. Her writing became more colorful, rich and often comical. Plus, flowers can’t hurt you - unless you eat the wrong one.
She teaches workshops, mentors young people, does design work for weddings and provides fresh local flowers to very happy customers who often stop by and walk through the field and talk while she picks them a bouquet. Their farm is a lovely event venue where many happy moments have been shared and community events held.
Her constant desire to learn caused her to surround herself with great people and strong leaders that she’s constantly gleaning wisdom from. She credits her success in the community, in business and in writing, to her mother, who taught her to love learning and to her husband who begins humming nervously when ever she excitedly tells him she has a “new idea”. To his credit, he eventually stops humming and backs her up all the way. He’s a saint.
