Graham Hickey

Graham Patrick Hickey (b. 1968) was born in Runcorn, Cheshire, England. He was brought up immersed in brass band and marching band culture, developing an early love of music alongside a keen interest in sport caving, spending many weekends exploring the potholes of Derbyshire and Yorkshire with friends.

From childhood he showed a passion for writing music, stories, poetry, and drawing. He later moved to Barnsley, South Yorkshire, to complete a Band Studies degree, during which he played with the South Yorkshire Police Band. He went on to join the British Army as a musician and became principal horn of The King’s Division Normandy Band near Preston.

He met his wife, Sue, at a local concert band, which he later became Musical Director of. They have two children, Charlotte and Matthew.

After several years as a professional Army musician, Graham changed career to become a music teacher, inspired by the talent he encountered in schools and by the creative potential of children’s musical theatre. It was during this period that his Christian faith deepened, shaped by reflection on near-death experiences while caving and by seasons of uncertainty while seeking work away from home.

He now lives in Preston with his family and continues to compose, teach, write, and share his faith through music and storytelling.
