Most people run a marathon before attempting an ultramarathon. Heiko did it the other way around.
Starting with the Black Forest Ultra, a Ultra over 2 days, and the Allgäu Ultra, he was already covering extreme distances before he ever crossed a standard marathon finish line. When he eventually got there, he went straight to one of the most legendary races on earth, the Comrades Marathon in South Africa. He wears his back-to-back Comrades medal with genuine pride, though he will tell you there is unfinished business. A better time is coming.
The highlight so far, accidentally qualifying for the Boston Marathon by winning his age group at a quiet marathon in the American Southwest. He noticed the qualifying time several weeks later. Typical.
In between all of this, he ran 504km through a European winter 12 marathons, 12 consecutive days, 12 European countries to raise money for refugee children. On limited training time. Using the exact mental tools his books are built on.
With an MBA, multiple endurance and mental performance coaching certifications, and decades of international experience, his books bring real, practical mindset tools to the runners who need them most — the ones over 40, somewhere in the middle of the pack, who know there is more in them than their results currently show.
They are right. And that is exactly what he writes about.
