Harry C. S. Wingfield

Welcome to my author page! Who is Harry C. S. Wingfield? I was born in North Carolina, raised in middle Georgia, and graduated from the University of Georgia (Go Dawgs!), where I was the "token goy" in a mostly Jewish fraternity, Tau Epsilon Phi. UGA is also where I found out I was gay, and started performing as a singer/songwriter. I did radio news for my "day job" for a few years after college, then started a brief career as a traveling salesman, in territories that took me all over the United States and gave me much inspiration for my music and writing. I earned an MFA in theatrical design from the University of Texas at Austin (Hook 'em, Horns!) in 1986. I sang at the first gay pride event in New Orleans, in Birmingham, AL, and in Austin, TX. I also sang at a gay pride festival in Los Angeles, and at the gay rodeo in Reno, NV. I was diagnosed with AIDS when I was teaching theatre at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1990. I have written three plays: Gratia Plena (a ten minute play), Goodnight, Dr. Watkins, and Open Discussion (a musical), a memoir entitled Closets: A Memoir With Music, and Human Subjects Research: An Insider's View, about my thirty years in medical research and research oversight. I retired from research work in 2020, and now live with my husband Vernon in central Florida (Touristburbia,) close enough to Walt Disney World that we can hear the fireworks every night.
