Lisa Murano

Quite a few years back Lisa Murano found herself moving from the suburbs of Pittsburgh to a homestead in the middle of nowhere. She did what any other bored animal lover with an tick problem would do...she started a guinea farm! The guineas were brought in to eat the ticks, but Lisa decided they needed friends so chickens and ducks were added to the flock that winter.

At any given time there are between 80 and 100 chickens, guineas, quail, geese or ducks in residence with the Murano family. While the original reason behind the guinea/chicken farm was for tick control in the woods around the house, Lisa now raises the various poultry for eggs, which she then incubates and sells.

Lisa started blogging about chicken farming in 2010. For a former food critic it was a great way to utilize her writing skills without having to travel to the big city. From health care to cleaning, there are dozens of issues that come up every day on a poultry farm and her blog Murano Chicken Farm is dedicated to finding solutions to everyday poultry issues, the spread of knowledge and the general joy of owning poultry!

Lisa hatches and sells thousands of chicks every year. She meets with every customer personally and often answer questions from customers long after they have taken their babies home.

Lisa became a licensed poultry technician in 2010. Her farm joined the NPIP in 2012. Her farm has been in business since 2009, and Lisa's first book Making Money With Chickens was published in 2016. She wrote the book about building a poultry business and how she believes breeding quality chickens is the key to making a profit selling chicks.
