I am a psychiatrist and pain medicine specialist. Treating persistent pain is a difficult thing to do. The tools we have are limited. Medical Cannabis was an idea that interested me, but rather than just jump into it, I decided to research the medical literature about cannabis as a medical treatment and how it works on our own built in systems. I spent two years researching the vast literature wading through hundreds of articles among the greater than 15,000 papers published in PubMed. The results were quite positive and I decided to incorporate it into my practice and write a book about this remarkable, self-directed approach. I found that even though I started most of my patients on the same treatment regimen, that it quickly changed and that each person helped me to find individual treatment approaches for their needs. I also found a remarkably effective treatment that lacked only in using the tools of a true medical approach.
Although much of the treatment was focussed around the use of THC and CBD, my research revealed other medical cannabinoids like THCV, THCA, CBDV, CBDA, CBN, CBG and CBC. Combining strains, delivery systems and delivery methods most often resulted in best outcomes. My patients on opioids and other pain medications started reducing them in high numbers. Their pain, sleep, stress, quality of life, energy and focus improved. They regained their normal lives. So, I wrote this book for the rest of you considering this treatment.
