Andy Orme

Dr Andy Orme has fished throughout his life. Although an angling allrounder, his main loves are the pursuit of specimens within the lakes and rivers of Britain and East Africa. In more recent years he has also targeted the big game fish of the Indian Ocean.

Andy trained as a student biologist in England - at the University of Exeter in Devon and the University of Reading in Berkshire. He achieved a PhD at the latter where he specialised in the study of aquatic organisms in their environment - very useful knowledge for an avid angler trying to locate fish and understand their feeding behaviour.

Andy has caught many large fish from sea and freshwater. In the 1980’s he won the National Association of Specialist Anglers/Angling Times ‘Fish of the Year’ competition and also the Barbel Catchers Club’s ‘Best Fish’ award. His achievement was to catch a 13 lbs winter barbel from the Hampshire Avon at Ibsley - a very large fish (97.7% of the national record) at that time.

Andy also worked hard to help establish the Barbel Society and was it’s first Chairman. He is now a Society Ambassador and scientific advisor.

Dr Andy has published a great many photographs and has written hundreds of articles in the British weekly and monthly angling press, plus made contributions to several books. He is the author of ‘Barbel Mania’, ‘Roving for Barbel’ and ‘The Amazing Meat Book’.

His ebooks also include Roving for Barbel Parts One and Two, The Amazing Meat Book, Nile Perch Fishing Safari Kenya and Nile Perch Fishing Safari Uganda. An ebook version of Barbel Mania is in preparation.

Professional positions involving tackle development and marketing within the British fishing tackle companies North Western and Ryobi Masterline, plus the operation of his own custom rod-building business (Seer Rods), has provided Andy with considerable experience of fishing tackle design.

Andy started and developed The Haven Fishery on the River Teme in Worcestershire, England. This involved the creation of a perfect riverine habitat for the fish and also the provision of assistance to many fellow anglers who, like Andy, appreciated the excellent fishing in the most tranquil and natural of situations.

In recent years, Andy has lived in England and Kenya. He has two young daughters Lily and Maria. He operates a private fishing boat from which he seeks the ferocious, tackle busting game fish of the Indian Ocean.
