Shira works with Lion Heart Migration and charitable law firm, Human Rights for All, in support of refugees, asylum seekers and stateless people, as well as all those who require a visa. In 2024, she also began teaching in the migration law post-graduate diploma program at the University of Technology, Sydney.

An experienced journalist, she previously worked in publishing and taught French while undertaking post-graduate research at the University of Queensland.
Shira’s second book, "Vietnam’s Modern Day People: Bridging Borders for Freedom" (Jefferson: McFarland, 2024), was published in Vietnamese by Quill Hawk Publishing in 2025 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Black April. It tells the story of how volunteer advocates from across the globe banded together to help several Vietnamese refugee families on their journey to freedom. Highlighting the extraordinary courage of “ordinary” people – both refugees and advocates – in their struggle for liberty, it shows what can be achieved when borders prove no boundary. The book was awarded third place in the Society & Social Sciences - Human Rights & Political Movements category of the Book Fest Awards of Spring 2026. It was also recognised with a Literary Titan Gold Award in July 2026. Shira's work has also appeared in online and print publications including The Sydney Morning Herald and The Guardian.
