Petros Violakis

Dr. Petros Violakis is an Assistant Professor of Homeland Security at Rabdan Academy in UAE, partner of the Strategic Communication and News Media Laboratory of Piraeus University and partner of the Laboratory of Intelligence and Cyber-security of Piraeus University.He holds a PhD degree in Politics from Exeter University, an MA in International Relations from University of Indianapolis, an MBA (focus in Marketing) and a BSc in Computer Science from University of Hertfordshire. His latest research is being situated within Politics, Communication, Policy Making and European Studies. More specifically, he investigates the Europeanisation of EU Defence and Security Policy through different perspectives and contributing factors, such as: domestic politics, political economy, establishment of a new security identity and culture, research and development (R&D), globalization and other institutional influence (NATO). The result of this research is published (2018) as an academic book (monograph), entitled “Europeanisation and the Transformation of EU Security Policy: Post-Cold War Developments in the Common Security and Defence Policy” by Routledge. In his book, Violakis incorporates all of his past knowledge and acquired skills related to academic research, technology, innovation (R&D), marketing research, economics, social impact, international relations and politics. Furthermore, in terms of expanding his research in the field of Europeanisation and European Studies, Violakis investigated the case of Turkey’s Europeanisation, Turkey and fake news, and along with M. Dogani, they investigate De-Europeanisation in terms of Learning, Policy making and fear.

Violakis ability for interdisciplinary research was developed through his 10 years of experience in telecom and defence industry, along with his studies. More specifically, his engagement in the telecom and defence industry was related to the development of state-of-the-art technology for telecom, defence and other areas such as maritime technology and applications, natural disasters systems and related applications and others. Thus, the construction of national and European coalitions, which included universities, private companies, governmental authorities and other institutes, played a significant role in the allocation of national and EU funding. Violakis successfully participated in the following research and development projects: TELEFOS, TELEAQUA, ESPEN, FireMentor, NAVTEXII, TRAVIS, EPIPLEON, DIAVLOS, PISCES, COMMAN and ArchiPelago. This intense engagement to R&D projects resulted to the distinction of the Marketing Team he worked with. The distinction was awarded, on behalf of EU, by the Greek Government for "Particularly improved performance in research, technology and innovation for the year 2005 and for the competitive presence in Europe". The team’s work was presented in several national and international exhibitions and workshops such as, Defendory International Exhibition, Thessaloniki International Exhibition, Technology and Innovation Exhibition (held by Ministry of Development).

Ο Δρ. Πέτρος Βιολάκης είναι Επίκουρος Καθηγητής Έθνικής Ασφάλειας στην Ακαδημία Rabdan στα ΗΑΕ, συνεργάτης του Εργαστηρίου Στρατηγικής Επικοινωνίας και Ειδήσεων του Πανεπιστημίου Πειραιώς και συνεργάτης του Εργαστηρίου Πληροφοριών και Ασφάλειας στον κυβερνοχώρο του Πανεπιστημίου Πειραιώς.. Είναι κάτοχος διδακτορικού διπλώματος (PhD) στην Πολιτική Επιστήμη από το Πανεπιστήμιο του Έξετερ (Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο), μεταπτυχιακού διπλώματος (MA) στις Διεθνείς Σχέσεις από το Πανεπιστήμιο Ιντιανάπολις (ΗΠΑ), μεταπτυχιακού στη διοίκηση επιχειρήσεων (ΜΒΑ) με κατεύθυνση Μάρκετινγκ και προπτυχιακού (BSc) στην Πληροφορική από το πανεπιστήμιο του Χερτφορντσαϊρ (Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο). Οι τελευταίες του έρευνες σχετίζονται με τον «Εξευρωπαϊσμό» των ενόπλων δυνάμεων και της αμυντικής βιομηχανίας των κρατών μελών της Ε.Ε. Στην έρευνά του, ο Βιολάκης ενσωματώνει όλη την προ-αποκτηθείσα γνώση και δεξιότητες, σχετικά με την τεχνολογία, τη καινοτομία (Έρευνα και Ανάπτυξη), την έρευνα μάρκετινγκ, τα οικονομικά, τον κοινωνικό αντίκτυπο, τις διεθνείς σχέσεις και την πολιτική. Σε αυτό συντέλεσε καθοριστικά η δεκαετής εμπειρία του στις επικοινωνίες και στην αμυντική βιομηχανία. Η εμπλοκή του στις τηλεπικοινωνίες και στην αμυντική βιομηχανία συνδέεται με την ανάπτυξη τεχνολογίας αιχμής για τις τηλεπικοινωνίες, την άμυνα και άλλους τομείς όπως ναυτική τεχνολογία και εφαρμογές, τεχνολογία για αντιμετώπιση φυσικών καταστροφών και σχετικές εφαρμογές, και άλλα. Για την ανάπτυξη των προαναφερθέντων τεχνολογιών αλλά και για την χρηματοδότησή τους, σημαντικό ρόλο έπαιξε η δημιουργία Εθνικών και Ευρωπαϊκών συνεργασιών, η οποία περιλαμβάνει Πανεπιστήμια, Ιδιωτικές Εταιρίες, Κρατικές αρχές και άλλα Ινστιτούτα. Ο Βιολάκης συμμετείχε στα ακόλουθα ερευνητικά και αναπτυξιακά έργα: TELEFOS, TELEAQUA, ESPEN, FireMentor, NAVTEXII, TRAVIS, EPIPLEON, DIAVLOS, PISCES, COMMAN and ArchiPelago. Με την πάροδο των χρόνων, η εντατική εμπλοκή του με έργα Έρευνας και Ανάπτυξης άκμασε και είχε ως αποτέλεσμα την διάκριση της ομάδας Μάρκετινγκ με την οποία εργάστηκε. Τη διάκριση απέμεινε εκ μέρους της Ε.Ε., η Ελληνική κυβέρνηση, για «τις ιδιαίτερα αυξημένες επιδόσεις σε δραστηριότητες Έρευνας – Τεχνολογίας – Καινοτομίας για το έτος 2005, καθώς και για την ανταγωνιστική παρουσία στον Ευρωπαϊκό χώρο». Τα αποτελέσματα αυτών των εργασιών παρουσιάστηκαν σε διάφορες εθνικές και διεθνείς εκθέσεις και εργαστήρια (workshops), όπως στη διεθνής έκθεση Defendory, στη Διεθνής Έκθεση Θεσσαλονίκης και στην Έκθεση Τεχνολογίας και Καινοτομίας του Υπουργείου Ανάπτυξης.
