Fred Schnurr earned his undergraduate degree in political science from Notre Dame where he graduated Cum Laude and played on a National Championship Football team. He has master's degree from Stanford in Latin American Studies and at Thunderbird Graduate School of Global Management he earned a master's in finance. He also completed his course work for a doctor of business administration in international business at Harvard Business School.
After spending twelve years in corporate America working in international trade, corporate finance, international investments and marketing, banking, and computer coding, Schnurr went on to pursue entrepreneurial ventures while working part time as a cab driver. He has also worked at various times as a dock worker, merchant marine seaman, and construction worker. He has lived in Brazil (twice), Mexico, France, Germany, and China and is fluent in Portuguese and Spanish and conversant in French, German, and Mandarin.
In the late nineties Schnurr decided to try his hand at creative writing after reading Stephen King's book "On Writing". Prior to this time Schnurr had never considered becoming a writer. However in his case at least this late decision had the advantage of affording Schnurr many different life experiences. He also found he had a gift for dialogue. He finished his first novel, The Channel, in three months in 2001. Later he had King in the cab and he offered to read The Channel when Schnurr published the book. After a considerable length of time Schnurr found an agent who took the book to a well known publisher. It went through 4 editors who each took about a year to decide that although they liked the book they were reluctant to take a chance on an older unknown like Schnurr. Schnurr then self published at Create Space. However, making a rookie mistake, Schnurr did not use a professional editor because the book has a lot of dialogue in Spanish, Portuguese, and German. Schnurr missed a lot of typos and also Create space at that time used inferior software which often hyphenated one syllable words. These issues have now been dealt with.
Shortly thereafter Schnurr sent book to a previous business partner then living in Florida. This partner loved the book (as did everyone else who had read it) and showed it to many military associates from Central Command. These very conservative people all loved the book. Later on we embarked on making a movie. Schnurr's colleague showed the book to many liberal Hollywood types who also loved the book. This is extremely rare in our polarized world. We now have a household name actor who will be our executive producer. The screen play is almost ready and funding has been identified. We have identified potential director and lead actors. Schnurr is now finally able to market the book aggressively.
Schnurr's second book, Yellow Apple, was written incrementally over about 10 Years and published in March 2018. Schnurr uses a very thinly disguised pseudonym in this book, "Joe Hacker". Several well known comedians have read and loved it. One late night TV host has stated that he wants Schnurr to go on the show and promote the book. It is highly likely that the book will be sold at airports and bus and rail stations around the country. A series on Netflix or HBO is quite possible.
A third book, "A Broken Tea Cup", a second novel, is two stories mostly in China. One story is set in the Tang Dynasty (745-756 CE) and the other is set in he present day (2005). The stories are connected by a painting. Schnurr wrote the book in 2008-2009 after returning from China in 2007. The book will probably be published late 2019. Several Hollywood groups, who have seen the first 4 chapters, have expressed enthusiasm. Schnurr is now researching his fourth book which will be a non fiction policy book about environmental economics and dealing with climate change in US, Canada, China, and possibly Brazil. It may do double duty as a Ph.D. dissertation.
