Frank Lehman

Frank Lehman is Associate Professor of Music at Tufts University, where he serves as Interim Chair of the Music Department. His research focuses on film music analysis, transformational theory, symphonic music, and the music of John Williams.

He is the author of Hollywood Harmony: Musical Wonder and the Sound of Cinema (Oxford University Press, 2018) and The Skywalker Symphonies: John Williams and the Music of Star Wars (Oxford University Press, 2026), and editor of Film Music Analysis: Studying the Score (Routledge, 2024) and the forthcoming Cambridge Companion to John Williams (Cambridge University Press, 2027).

His scholarship has appeared in leading music theory and musicology journals, and his public-facing writing includes interactive features for The New York Times and The Washington Post. He is a recipient of the Society for Music Theory's Film and Multimedia Interest Group Publication Award and its Public-Facing Music Theory Publication Award. He maintains "The Complete Catalogue of the Themes of Star Wars," a widely downloaded reference resource available at his personal website (franklehman-dot-com).

Lehman lives outside Boston with his family. When not researching and teaching, he enjoys spending time with his family and indulging his passion for bird photography.
