Paul M. Sailer

Author Paul Sailer: "History is not dull when it contains engaging, in-depth, true stories about the fascinating young people of the war years. Certainly, there is something we can learn from them."

Paul Sailer has been interested in WW II aviation history for many years. He received a bachelor’s degree in Social Studies, with an emphasis in American History, from Moorhead State College, Moorhead, Minnesota, in 1969, and a pilot’s rating from the U.S. Army’s Advanced Flight School at Fort Rucker, Alabama, in 1970. Sailer flew UH-1H Iroquois (Huey) and OH-58A Kiowa helicopters with the 20th Engineer Brigade in Vietnam in 1970 and 1971. The author and his wife, Dianna, manage a tree farm in central Minnesota.

Sailer's first book is a deeply moving story about one of America's outstanding fighter pilots in WW II, twenty-two-year old Don M. Beerbower. The book is: The Oranges are Sweet: Major Don M. Beerbower and the 353rd Fighter Squadron - November 1942 to August 1944.

A new commemorative limited edition of The Oranges are Sweet was published in 2019. Upgrades have been made to all maps, twenty additional photos/images have been added, new text based on the author's visits to airfields and combat areas in England and France grace the book, inclusion of important information from his ongoing research, and other improvements make this a true collector's edition.

The author's second publication is a companion volume entitled I Had a Comrade: Stories about the bravery, comradeship, and commitment of individual participants in the Second World War. Commenting on the ten riveting stories in the book, he says: "I have known since my military service in Vietnam that comradeship between people during wartime is quite different than close personal friendships at other times in life. Our English words do not adequately define the selfless, trust-based, sacrificial love that is intensified by warfare."
