Peter M. Schwarz, the author of Energy Economics, now in a second edition published in October of 2022, first gained an interest in energy economics while earning his Ph.D. at The Ohio State University. Upon graduation, he took a job at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he was able to do research with Duke Energy on electricity pricing.
He has continued to research electricity pricing, most recently on compensation to customers who supply solar energy to utilities and customers who participate in demand response programs that reduce usage during peak times. He is also investigating innovative rates aimed at encouraging owners of electric vehicles to charge their vehicles during off-peak times.
He has traveled extensively both in the U.S. and internationally to present his research. Internationally, he has presented at universities, conferences, and companies, in Israel, Germany, Turkey, Greece, and China. His interactions with China have led to a body of research primarily addressing measures needed to meet targets to reduce the use of coal, energy, and carbon emissions.
